And while I think of it, does anyone know where I can find decent-sized pieces of vellum? The stuff made from animal skins, not the paper type. I have a friend (who I hope hasn't found my journal yet) who likes doing absolutely gorgeous calligraphy and other artwork (you should see her LOTR map - hand-inked, giant-sized, and legible to the tiniest details) on this medium, and as I shall be going to Canberra for her and [livejournal.com profile] mabraham's birthday parties the week before Dancemania, vouchers to such a store (if I can't afford a complete hide, which seems likely, as dance shoes may eat my budget...) would be an appreciated gift, together with a catalogue or something *grin*

So if anyone out there in LJ-Land happened to have a line on the stuff, I'd be ever so grateful *innocent blink-blink*

I don't know if they sell the real-deal out here in the states, but I can frequently find it at art stores. I'd suggest a roll of 116 Vellum for calligraphy work, but often that's a preference that is left to the artist - I have discovered that some vellums are more resistant to ink, others more accepting and the quality varies. Clearprint makes vellum in pads, rolls, sheets, sheets with grids, etc that is more often used for drafting, but could be used for what you are thinking of as well. There are various kinds of Washi that you could buy with varying amounts of binder in them. I used to know which ones to suggest - which had more or less absorbency to them- and I have since mislaid the article I had that described each sort. I can certainly obtain regular vellums for you if you'd like ...

The big art supply store on Frome Street (near the Christian Science/Rhino Room used to have some, but I suspect that you may have had to order it in. Scribes in Adelaide Arcade could get it, except I don't think it (the store) is there any more. My information is probably well out of date (as in more than 10 years).

The store I previously worked for in Chicago, Ill used to order in specialty papers for anyone who required them. Problem is often you have to order in a specific quantity. IIRC, most Mullberry-based papers should have the quality you are looking for for such a project.

Ordering stuff in is generally not a problem for this friend - she's been having trouble sourcing it full stop. There are plenty of places who will stock 2"x2" pieces for spellwork, but one can't do what she does on pieces that small. I'm currently asking for permission to show you guys a pic of the LOTR map (which, if I get permission, will be posted in a friends-locked post, of course).

Eckersley's, yes? And there's a The Scribe in Adelaide Arcade...

There are a few places we (Australians) can order from in the US and UK, but the problem is (as always) freight doubling the cost of the goods. This is the 'local' supplier I'm comparing to - they're in Sydney rather than Canberra, but they do mail orders, and they're the only Australian supplier we've found, so far.

Freight, even here for paper is outrageous. I wish I still worked in a reasonable art-supply environment where I could obtain samples without anyone blinking an eye. In Chicago we had a great relationship with many of the suppliers and could obtain samples so that our employees could talk more eloquently and intelligently about the papers we sold.

This supplier despite not being local, looks like they have a nice range of products. Frankly, anyone who is willing to do small mail orders is a rare find. Especially for papers.

I wish I could be of more help! The only person i know of who has an extensive knowledge of Chinese papers used for Calligraphy is a professor out here who I do not have contact with during the summer ... and he gets his papers from China when he visits family there. :_:

You *do* realise, don't you, that it's just down the street from my work.

I've been tempted to buy some vellum for some illumination, but originally at $50 a sheet, I thought not. But offcuts, for bookmarks, at $5 each - enough to play with but not too much... hmmmm

Should I do a fact-finding tour?

Given that I get lost in Adelaide, I had absolutely no idea
