SA Youth Bridge Championships this weekend. Found it amusing. As an example of the amusingness, see the following hand (apologies to non-bridge players for the jargon and inexplicableness of it all)

You hold AQJ2 J92 AK84 94, Vul against Not, North (partner who I trust to bid judiciously on the slightest excuse) deals and passes. RHO (who I trust to hold crap on a stick and bid lots anyway) opens 1C. I chose to make a takeout double (showing a hand with which I would have opened, hand the guy sitting on my right not done it first, not many of the suit he bid, and no suit outstandingly longer than any other suit in my hand). Let me put it all down properly:

 N E S W
 / 1C X 1D*
 1H     1S 2H**  2S
 3H / / X***
 / 3S**** X All Pass

** Partner is generally quite happy in 4-3 fits. Personally I prefer more, but partner won't kill me, and technically I've only promised three hearts. Also, I hold a little bit more in the way of high cards than my double promises. We won't be in game, since partners 1H shows about 8 or 9 points (where Aces = 4 HCP, Kings = 3, Queens =2, and Jacks = 1, with extra points awarded for shortages in the oppositions' suits), so we're competing for the best partscore.
***Penalties
*** He knew better than to pull his partners' penalty doubles. But he'd forgotten what the 1D bid was...

* When the auction was over, 1D was alerted by West as a transfer to hearts... East mentioned that usually both of them (and not just him) forget that they've agreed that this is a transfer.

I lead one of my big diamonds, and dummy tracked with 9873 AQ8763!! 62 K. East had pulled his partners' penalty double of the 6card suit into which his partner had transferred... He made four tricks (of the nine he'd contracted for, out of thirteen total) for +1100 to us.

This hand kind of balanced the one where we took 1NTXX off for +1000, but our teammates were in 3NTXX for -2200.
