As of today, there is another half hibiscus fewer in my garden. It wasn't in good shape, and I'm not sure how it'll deal with the pruning I gave it, which was positively kind for me. The placing of bits of mandarine tree in the green waste bin for taking away by the council progresses. Most of the small bits have either gone or are in the green bin, or in the box next to the green bin, to be tipped in when the bin next gets emptied in just over a week's time. Decent sized bits still to go. I need to check council regulations on the inserting of large bits in the green bin - I may have to arrange for them to be taken to the tip without the councils' help.

I also filled in the hole left by the excavation of the concrete pole, dug over that bed, and planted my potatoes. I need to get more straw before they grow, in order to bury the potato plants in it instead of hilling up the dirt over the plants. The hilling is supposed to help improve the drainage for the tubers, but since I added a bag of gypsum and a bag of cow manure to that bed today, it's already slightly raised, and given the clayness it's not likely to actually improve much more.

My SO provided dinner tonight. There was, apparently, leftovers at work. I'm glad there was one night this month that dinner was both at home and not cooked by me /rant. There will be strawberry strudel wot I made today for dessert, with yoghurt, and I shall go enjoy it now, and go to bed.

There will be picking of broad beans in the afternoon, and going to the Organic Festival thingy in the morning.

If your council does hard/green rubbish collections, that would probably be the way to go for the big tree bits.

Will call soon, have question about walking stick.

Hard rubbish collection was in August. Next hard rubbish collection will be in either 6 or 12 months time. I've chopped them up enough that they'll fit in the green bin if it's OK for them to be in there. Or I could take them down to one of the industrial places down the road and use their mini-skip.

Broad bean jealousy! Ours are only now flowering.

I finally convinced Himself to get rid of the scruffy ancient lamb's ear plant in front of the sitting room window. We've replaced it with another rock-bordered bed (a half-circle one to match the contour of the paving), transplanted our alyssums around its inner edges, and are going to get some young diosma bushes today. Don't talk to me about clayey soil! - sodding Melbourne :D

We had just enough warm weather and good sun that it seemed the beans went from 2cm long to edible size almost overnight. They're starting to get bean-size now, past the edible pod size. They needed that sunny week, though, or they would still be puny.

I love Alyssum - we have some self-seeding itself all over the front yard. It's making itself into an excuse not to mow the lawn, since it's popping up all through the grass.

It is a lovely groundcover! The good news is that all the alyssums we transplanted on Saturday are getting over the shock and perking up again. I remember the first time I tried to transplant some bedded-in ones, and didn't realise that you have to take up the entire root system in one go :-\

We bought a couple of young Diosma and an Eristemon (wax flower bush) for the front bed, and had fun picking out a selection of edging rocks at the nursery. There I was, standing on a huge pile of rocks in my Gothopaedics and garden gloves, and S yelling "make sure you get ones with lichen on them! I like lichen!" It was one of the only fun bits in an otherwise crap weekend (ME relapse and unscheduled mental illness break).

At least our silverbeet is flourishing now. If only I liked silverbeet. Oh well, the rocket is coming up now, and the spinach looks good, and we've sown purple and globe carrots...
