At work they installed extra-sensitive fire alarms about a year ago to stop people smoking in the toilets and above their stalls. When they go off, the sirens start, and the PA system proclaims to everyone (in a manner that is impossible to hear clearly over the din of a quiet day in the Central Markets) that they should wait for further instructions. Which never come, by the way.
We know that the security guards are notified of where the detection has occurred because we see them sprinting off in the direction of the toilets and other frequent offenders, just in case it's an actual emergency and not idiots.
Now, all stalls and stallholders have been warned at intervals about the system, and people who set it off by smoking get fined. It is a place where people eat and buy food and ingredients and so forth, so being fined by the city council who own the Markets is actually cheaper than being taken to court for Health & Safety violations.
It (the alarms) went off last Tuesday, and the Friday before that. Surely a year of being fined is long enough to work out that smoking should happen outside, away from the detectors?
