Why can I not say "Inner Monologue"?

Why did I try to say the phrase to my SO's parents? What was I trying to say?

I did eventually get a clip over the ear from my SO's great-aunt. I had to insult my SO's mother to get it. ;) We all laughed because it was a funny insult.

It's only an inner monologue if you don't say it out loud - otherwise it's an outer monologue & people might start crossing the street when they see you coming... Then again, if your inner monologue is amusing & you smile to yourself a lot, they'll cross the street too.
