I'm still not convinced that the whole Windoze security updates thing is worth bothering with. I suppose that, now we have a high-speed connection, I could bother, but after so long (my last attempt at updating was, lessee, September '03!), I've just got used to lurking blissfully behind our Linux firewall - which is still the best way to avoid infections :-)
The other best way to protect yourself when running anything from Micro$oft is to never use IE. As in never never never. I've been using Firefox for a good while now, and it's excellent. I also use Vet antivirus, set on twice-daily update request, and several scumware detectors including AdAware. Oh, and a ZoneAlarm firewall on the Windoze box itself.
I'm soooo not a geek as it happens, but having one's SO in the IT industry tends to make for heightened security awareness :-)
