Dad works for SANTOS. For those who don't know, they just did a massive reorganisation that resulted in a lot of middle and upper management getting packages and shown the door. Dad was aiming to be given one, because he really wants to retire. Instead, the company was emphasising retiring people in Brisbane, so by the time they got to the employees in Adelaide, all the people with his expertise and experience in the area he works in (of which they previously had something like four) had either been given packages or retired voluntarily or reached mandatory retirement age. So they offered Dad a larger pay packet, he counter-offered a larger one and they accepted with relief. I think he should have asked for double and made them bargain him down.
But anyway, because Dad hasn't taken an uninterrupted holiday in years, he has way too much sick leave, long service leave, and just plain leave piled up, which they want him to use. Unfortunately, every time (except Christmas some years) that Dad tries to take more than one day off in a row, there's a problem they need him to fix. So, in order to use his accumulated leave, as requested by the company, Dad is taking currently four day weeks. I estimate that in a few years time he may have got it down to manageable levels.
