Something I've noticed? Sometimes people get really disoriented when you answer the phone with "Good afternoon!" at 10am. And if you say "Good morning!" at 11:27 am, the people in the states 1/2 hour ahead are often really careful to tell you that it's three minutes off being afternoon where they are. Todays' was very careful to let me know that although it was still morning where I am, it was still morning where she was, by three minutes. By the time she got to the point, it was no longer morning where she was.

Tomorrow I get a haircut. Yay.

My SO always says "Good [whatever time of day], {company name}" when he picks up the office phone, but the [whatever time of day] seems to be a product of whatever flights of spaced-out whimsy his brain is on at any given moment! I've known him to say "Good morning..." at 1930, "Good evening..." at 1145, and he can rarely cope with the concept of "Good afternoon..." at all :P

Ah, but you see, "Good morning" is reserved for the first time you see someone in a given day - even if it is 19:30 :-) I keep getting corrected when I say "Good morning" after about 15:00, and confused looks when I say "Good evening" at 09:00, to which the obvious answer is "Wishful thinking - that is, I wish I could go home already".

The only other time I've really seen it was from a shift worker, who used "Good morning" from about 16:00 to 20:00, "Good afternoon" from 20:00 to about 00:00, and "Good evening/Good night" most of the rest of the time.

But that's precisely what my Dearly Beloved does! Except for the times he says things like "Good morning...um, evening...um...hello, {company name}..." :D

Pizza

I heard of someone once who would answer the phone with "Hi, Dominos Pizza, can I take your order please?" just to see how badly it would wrong-foot people. Apparently, it did :-)
