We (having been in our house almost a year now) held a housewarming yesterday (local public holiday). It was wonderful to see so many of my SO's friends, particularly the ones with children or who live inconveniently far away.
Two of those who live inconveniently far away are an ex of my SO's and her fiancee who are wonderful people we'd see more often if they didn't live up in the Adelaide Hills. Unfortunately they do, and so to visit them we need to go up a series of really windy roads so by the time we get there I'm always badly carsick. But they came to see us, bringing a very lovely tall wrought iron candlestick (complete with finger guards for when you're hitting someone with it) and scented candle that I'M NOT ALLERGIC TO!!!
This last point is the point of this post, as I am jubilant to find a lightly scented candle (it smells vaguely cinnamony) and I love scents reminiscent of spices. Usually perfume is too strong for me - on the skin most perfumed things make my skin flake (this list includes make-up, toilet paper, hair stuff, detergent, laundered fabric - I get unscented liquid soap from a local store and get perfumed and essential oils added to my taste) and in the air they either give me a headache, hayfever, or they turn my stomach. Rather like extended exposure to cigarette smoke and other air-borne pollutants.
But the couple in question picked a lightly scented candle, having noticed I like candles (even though all the scented ones are packed in an airtight container most of the time) and also noticed my difficulties with smoke and strong scents at the last bonfire of their's that we attended. And the scent goes very well with the scents I had added to my shower gel the last time we saw them. I'd like to know the exact scents used, but I'm unlikely to find out without more research than I feel like doing in the next month or three.
I'm incredibly flattered that they put that much effort into remembering my preferences - it has made me feel very special.
