I believe that the purpose of trousers is to hide one's underpants.

That is all.

If only some were not so agnostic about this particular belief!

... and in Glasgow there seems to be a remarkable correlation between non-underpant-hiding-trousers and thong/g-string wearing, and I'm sure that's far too much information to know about someone that I've not been properly introduced to.

Is there a corollary to this that the purpose of a kilt is to make people ask what you're wearing underneath it?

We once saw that effect, but with normal undies. We were all very disturbed.

It is a universal Truth that Underpants-Under-Trousers Agnosticism is a Belief full of fallacy

At least the underpants are clean and with only the required number of holes (no more than are strictly required for proper function) given that he has parental examples such as yourself. 'Cos that's just icky.

... In the case of one very very drunk groomsman at an after-wedding party I went to, the answer was 'NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!' He was standing next to his wife when demonstrating this fact to the bar...

It was certainly both amusing and startling to witness. The incident in question was prompted by another very drunk male endeavouring to 'subtly' find out without asking. In the middle of the bar. Not, say, by following the kilt-wearer to the bathroom, which one would have thought would be logical...

I think the difference is that asking about it implies little or nothing. Following someone to the bathrooms to check their underwear status could imply that you want to do something about it...

I guess... But since I don't know whether a gentleman wearing a kilt would just hoik it up to do his business, or whether he would choose to use a stall... All I can say is one doesn't go to the bathroom to look at what another person is doing, one coincidentally needs to use the facilities at the same time.

Whereas endeavouring to find out by trying to pull said kilt up just enough to see without the kilt-wearer noticing, in the middle of a bar, definitely could imply something ;)
