I think BitchPhD has a point. Although the article linked doesn't state whether the puppy was live at the time, nor do any of the others. I'd assume so.

And they don't say whether the guy got further jail time when the snake was found to have been neglected, on top of what he got for animal cruelty.

Reading between the lines, I don't think it was done so much as to feed the python, but as an entertainment for the two watching teenagers. This, and the method used (soaking it in oil so it goes down well), moves it from a simple act of feeding an animal to one of intentional purposeful cruelty.

Of course, in the trial, most jurors would actually miss this distinction, and simply convict on "the mean man fed a cute puppy dog to an evil snakey-wakey."

*headdesk* humans. not so bright after all

i don't know which will get him the hardest time in the slammer - being cruel to a puppy, or being cruel to a snake.

[i guess he wasn't thinking about what would happen when he got found out/caught. the dumb ones never do.]

*sheepish* One of the teachers at the music school has multiple large snakes - he's shown me video of his latest acquisition(s) feeding. It is entertaining (although not so much for the other ladies in the room at the time who squeaked and went elsewhere when the snake made a strike).

Without further information, you couldn't say for for certain if it was for neglect of the snake, or for feeding it a puppy. The news articles seem to be somewhat ambiguous. They do imply it is for the puppy, but newspeople have been known to imply all sorts of things.
