Partner is dealer. He picks up his hand, thinks for a moment, and opens 4 Spades. RHO passes, you pass with your 4, JT9862, KJ, J852. LHO bids 5C. Partner goes into a tank, and starts counting on his fingers. He then bids 5 Spades, which is passed out. The Ace of Diamonds is led from West, and you put down dummy and go get drinks without waiting for the completion of the trick. By the time you get back, the cards have been put away, and partner has racked up 11 tricks.

When you finish the match, one of the first things you get asked by someone who played at another table was "What happened on that big spade hand?" So you look at the hand records, and apparently partner was bidding on AJT9876532, Q5, - , A! The only way to take five off is for the opposition to cash their two big hearts, and then for East to ruff the third one with his singleton Queen (overruffed with the Ace), so that his partners' singleton King takes a trick, instead of falling under the Ace when partner draws trumps.

I was quite glad to be playing North today. I usually sit South, but for some reason sat otherwise, and was declarer on only one hand before 11am. *dance for joy!* *evil looks for those who organised the Seniors' (and therefore the Youth) at 9:30am* We didn't arrange it that way, it's just the way the bidding sequences went. It was the first partscore that match, right after partner (who doesn't play beercards) scored a beercard, and I went one off when the opposition can make game. Average for the Seniors' was E/W in game and making, -450. Average for the Youth was -310, so our opposition weren't the only ones not in game. Anyway, +6 for that board, +21 for the match, against one of the other likely pairs.

Also, the flickering lights at the bridgeclub have not yet been fixed. As of Thursday, that means three flouros gone. The one next to the door has been going for over a week and a half now without replacement. I am Not Happy at the Housekeeping SubCommittee, and need to replenish the drugs in my handbag, lest I have none when tomorrows' migraine starts. I finished off all of Mums' drugs today.

Flickering Lights

And I thought we were slack at work at fixing blinking lights!

Re: Flickering Lights

It bugs me (at bridge) because I know I'm not the only person who's mentioned it to whoever was directing at the time they were playing and found it a pain. And I'm glad Glasses With Charms On hasn't been in, because all it takes is a minute or so of flickering lights and she's out of commission for a couple of days.

I mean, seriously, flickering lights at a State level event? That's just not good enough. The first light to go has been going for two Thursdays and this weekend, that's four days of State level bridge. If it's not fixed by the ANOT, I'm going to seriously think about calling for the replacement of the Housekeeping SubCommittee. And he will not be happy.
