1) Well, 50km in ANY direction from my home is pretty much wilderness, farmland, or sandypaw's house. So I'd probably be either camping, enjoying the night air having wandered away from my companions, or stranded on the freeway and ringing the RAA.

2) Numbers do what you want - what you get out of them is what you put in. They're never mean - sometimes inexplicable, but never deliberately cruel. I fell in love with numbers shortly after falling in love with reading. They never make promises only to break them, they don't care what you look like or what your tastes are, and they're always there when you want them.

And a complicated equation that resolves itself elegantly is a thing of beauty.

3) Most mispronunciations are along the lines of "Fray-uh". I got "Sray-uh" once from someone who had only seen my signature. I've learnt to accept that most people do not pronounce my name "Free-yuh" as my family and I do (every time we got a new teacher, the entire class was waiting for the end of the roll where they would chorus out a correction... I used to be very sensitive about my name.) But the worst spelling mistake I've ever seen was perpetrated by a school teacher who, when she left the school, gave each child she taught a Christmas card. She had taught me for the preceding 3-4 years, checking my name off on the roll at every music class. So my card was addressed to "Freer".
